We were delighted to hear Cockerton Fisheries, located at 311 Woodland Road in Darlington, came out on top. The process saw people vote for their favourite chip shop, with a list of the top ten being published online. From this, the voting panel spoke with the leading candidates, and we hope the panel tasted meals from each and every potential winner!
That is the sort of judging panel we’d like to find ourselves on!
The Northern Echo spoke with the winner, chip shop owner Sam Todd, who said: “Oh my word that's amazing. Wow. I'm delighted. It's all down to hard work and looking after our customers. And the staff are amazing. We go out of our way for our customers. We have lots of regulars and have a delivery service for elderly people. Since Covid, I have carried on with that. On a Saturday, I have 20 to 30 people that I deliver to and take the food into their house - they just love it. It's all about looking after and doing that extra for our customers - as well as having the best fish and chips."
The delivery service is a great example of why the shop is so highly regarded in the local community. Yes, there are delivery service providers available these days, but they’re most readily used on smartphone devices and apps. It might be that many potential customers don’t have the option to use these apps, or perhaps have no interest in doing so.
The fact that Cockerton Fisheries provides this service is undoubtedly good for business, but it provides an invaluable service. This is the sort of thing that helps a business to stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons.
