Good leisure options make a local area better

You don’t need us to tell you the benefits of a fit and healthy lifestyle. Anthony Jones Properties are property market specialists, not fitness gurus. However, it’s pretty obvious that being active brings a range of benefits, but there are many barriers to a fit and healthy lifestyle.

A lack of facilities is a common barrier to being healthier, which is why we’re pleased to see progress on a local sports complex. The brand new Faverdale Leisure Complex is making waves, and it's packed with potential that's got everyone talking.

There’s a lot to take in with the new sports complex

Imagine a 60,000 square-foot facility that's designed to bring our community together through sport. We're looking at a truly impressive development that goes way beyond your average sports centre. Football and cricket training areas, golf simulators, a state-of-the-art gym, a canteen, and even a dedicated padel tennis court – this complex has something for everyone.

It's not just about providing facilities; it's about creating opportunities for our younger generation. For families, fitness enthusiasts, and sports lovers, this is more than just a new leisure centre – it's a hub of opportunity. It shows exactly why Darlington continues to be such an exciting place to live.

It’s not just about building facilities; there is a need to build communities, creating spaces where people can come together, stay active, and have fun. There's a real sense that this complex could be a game-changer for grassroots sports in Darlington, offering accessible training spaces that have been desperately needed.

This is the kind of forward-thinking development that Darlington needs going forward.

Local support in place for the project

Francis Ward is the director of Ward and Sons, and they have been behind this project from the start. Franci spoke to The Northern Echo, saying: “I have spent years being involved in grassroots sports including boxing and football and I have always found it difficult to find a venue. Even now, we are still travelling to Middlesbrough and other areas to take part in a 6-a-side game as there is no availability in Darlington. Darlington is a thriving town, with hundreds of new housing developments under construction and new infrastructure to go with it. It’s a fantastic town, one of the main reasons I only develop in Darlington, and have done for over 10 years, is to make it better.”

We agree with the notion that Darlington is a thriving town, and there are many reasons why people are looking at the area as a place to settle down and enjoy family life. Developments like this provide benefits far beyond physical exercise, they foster a sense of community, making Darlington a place people want to live.

Local politicians have their say

As you’d expect from a project of this standing, local politicians are keen to have their say on the matter.

Scott Durham is the Conservative councillor for Faverdale Ward and he welcomed the development. Scott said: “It’s encouraging to see this facility approved, bringing something different to the area and creating more jobs for residents, I’ve canvassed residents on numerous occasions, and it’s clear that the vast majority want more amenities closer to home.”

Labour Councillor David Beckett also spoke about the project, saying: “I welcome the approval of this development, which will complement the Dolphin Centre and Eastbourne Sports Complex to make it much easier for children and adults in Darlington – especially in the Brinkburn and Faverdale ward – to access high-quality sports facilities. With this development, the provision of facilities for football, cricket, and tennis, plus a gym, makes it appealing for a wide range of people. I hope this helps people of all ages in the nearby community, town, and surrounding areas to become more active and add to Darlington’s rich sports heritage.”

We appreciate there will be some people unhappy about this development as it potentially limits the options Darlington FC have going forward for their own plans, but for the wider community, there is a lot of positivity around this development.
